Over the past few months Rite Aid has traveled across the country celebrating our 50th Anniversary with 50 Acts of Wellness. Manhattan, NY
With Hurricane Sandy wreaking the second most damage of any storm in US history, the rebuilding efforts will clearly take years not months. As its 50th Act of Wellness, Rite Aid is donating $50,000 each to the Empire State Relief Fund and the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, both dedicated to supporting long term rebuilding efforts.

Our RA50 truck traveled from the heavily-damaged south shore of Long Island to several locations of Staten Island, site of the most Hurricane Sandy fatalities, to stock the free stores set up for hospital employees whose homes were damaged or destroyed. With signs of the devastation from Hurricane Sandy still clearly visible, a tractor trailer loaded with donated products and a crew of more than 20 Rite Aid associates turned out to support the Breezy Point Cooperative Relief Center.

Following the RA50 team’s efforts to stock the Relief Center in Rockaway Point, New York Officials reached out to Rite Aid for help in stocking another Relief Center – this one at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. In less than 24 hours after the call for help, the Rite Aid truck arrived.

The final stop for RA50 was to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, a program that provides financial assistance and support to members of the Naval Services of the United States and their family members.

The next stop for the RA50 team was Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters to deliver 50 New Family Kits filled with baby care essentials, such as baby bottles, diapers and wipes to families whose infants are being cared for at the hospital.

RA50 partnered with the Norfolk United Soccer Club to help them stay on top of their game. Rite Aid delivered 20 coolers filled with essentials like first aid items, bottled water and healthy snacks, plus Rite Aid gift cards for coaches to help them refill the coolers throughout the season.

Rite Aid celebrated Veterans Day by partnering with Operation Homefront, a program dedicated to providing unique and direct services to meet the needs of injured service members.

Fitness expert Denise Austin joined us on our final RA50 stop in Atlanta to lead members of Girls, Inc., in an exercise flash mob at a local Rite Aid store.

RA50’s Cold & Flu Crew took morning commuters by surprise on their way to work at Five Points Station, Atlanta’s main MARTA hub, when they handed out packets full of flu-fighting items.

The next RA50 stop was Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where Rite Aid associates received a special tour of the children’s hospital and made a delivery to families whose infants are being cared for at the hospital.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States; however, over the years it has ranked higher in Atlanta, sometimes topping the charts at number five. Many times those suffering from diabetes don’t yet know they have the disease. To help call attention to the high incidence of diabetes in Atlanta, Rite Aid associates helped connect residents to resources for healthier living.

Today, RA50 delivered a healthy dose of wellness to Atlanta area families in need. We visited Springdale Place, a 24-hour facility to assist mothers in gaining and maintaining self-sufficiency.
Staten Island, NY
With many NY and NJ residents in desperate need in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Rite Aid’s 50 Acts of Wellness took on a new meaning and focus. Immediately after the storm, The Rite Aid Foundation, store, field and supply chain teams mobilized to distribute free bottled water at five stores in the hardest hit areas.

Happy Halloween! Our RA50 team brought no tricks but lots of treats to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles with an ice cream social featuring everyone’s favorite: Thrifty Ice Cream, Rite Aid’s very own award-winning ice cream. Miss California 2012 Leah Cecil joined in on the fun, which included appearances from the Tuggy mascot and the Thrifty Ice Cream mascots: Cone Boy and Cone Girl.

To help the children at the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood understand the importance of regular exercise in maintaining a healthy weight, RA50 brought in fitness expert Denise Austin to teach fun exercises that kids can do anywhere to stay fit.

More than 40% of children in Los Angeles are either overweight or obese, which can lead to severe health consequences including Type 2 diabetes and increased risk of heart disease and stroke. To help get kids moving and show how much fun exercise can be, RA50 brought fitness expert Denise Austin to Harmony Elementary School, of the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she led a group of 95 fifth graders in high-energy fitness routines.

Knowledge is power in staying well at any age. That’s why we kicked off RA50 in Los Angeles by providing area seniors at the Angelus Plaza Senior Activity Center with free glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.

RA50 partnered with the Portland Youth Soccer Association to help these athletes stay on top of their game.

RA50’s Cold & Flu Crew took morning commuters by surprise at the Portland Transit mall when teams of two took over the streets in downtown Portland to hand out more than 1,000 Cold & Flu Packets.

We visited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland today, delivering 300 “after-school kits” filled with school supplies, personal care items and healthy snacks.

RA50 kicked things off in Portland by making a special delivery to the Oregon Food Bank headquarters, which distributes donated food to 20 regional food banks, who then distributes the food to more than 900 programs and agencies throughout Oregon and Clark County area.

We ended our RA50 tour of Detroit at Beaumont Children’s Hospital, a research and teaching hospital that meets the needs of more than 100,000 infants, children and teens. We are grateful to have a pantry named after us to in honor of Rite Aid’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospital donations: the Rite Aid Family Pantry.

We were excited to take our anniversary celebration to the Matrix Family Health Center in Detroit. We partnered with the Detroit Health Start program to deliver 10 cribs filled with baby care essentials and 100 New Family Kits stocked with baby supplies.
